In January 2024, ONDC joined forces with Google, Antler, Protean and Paytm to launch “Build for Bharat”, a nationwide hackathon that aimed to democratise the digital commerce ecosystem in India. This initiative helped ONDC in leveraging community contribution to find innovative and scalable solutions to tackle the most critical challenges in ONDC adoption. This initiative created a unique opportunity for innovators and entrepreneurs to solve existing challenges on open networks, empowering them to develop solutions that address real-world problems faced by everyone involved, from merchants and MSMEs to delivery agents and brands.
This event invited startups, developers, and students to build solutions across three verticals:
New Ventures (Next Generation Start-ups): Founders, organisations, and professionals tackle tough problems across sectors in digital commerce, building scalable businesses with milestone-based grants and mentoring.
Scalable Solutions: Tech innovators/individuals address pressing needs and challenges of the ONDC ecosystem, creating implementable solutions.
Foundation Solutions: College students (18+) develop practical solutions to address holistic challenges.
A total of 17 problem statements were defined across three verticals and covered topics like cataloguing, inventory digitization and management, Indic language support, logistics, data as a service, financial services and more.

We hosted a range of activities to educate and engage participants, including online masterclasses, Ask Me Anything and in-person meetups to foster a sense of community and collaboration. These efforts ensured participants were mentored and well-equipped to create innovative solutions.
The last lap of this hackathon was a dynamic two-day event featuring action packed demo days held at the Google campus, culminating in a grand Award Ceremony to celebrate the most outstanding solutions. The demo days served as an opportunity for top 60 finalist teams to present their solutions, which were evaluated by a jury panel comprising industry leaders and business stalwarts. This was followed by facilitating the winners in the evening. The award ceremony graced by founders, CXOs and Venture Capitalists and the prizes included Google Cloud Credit worth upto $ 202k, cash value of over 3 crore and an equity based grant of $ 250k by Antler India.
